Frysztak was settled by Saxon pioneers at the invitation of King Casimir the Great in the early 14th Century. The name Frysztak is a Polonization of Frei Stadt meaning (tax-)Free City.

Although the Diocese of Rzeszow calls this parish "Holy Cross", local folks still refer to it by its original name "Narodzenia NMP" meaning "Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary". The parish is indeed old and is mentioned in the records of the Diocese of Krakow in 1375. A wooden church built in 1442 was replaced in the early 20th Century. The decision to build the current church was reached in 1924 and the completed church was dedicated in 1938.

In the 19th Century, Jewish residents of this area attended the synagogue in Frysztak.
Greek Catholic residents attended church in Rzepnik.
