Only two native sons have ever been given the title "Great" by Poles, King Casimir the Great (1310-1370) and Pope John-Paul the Great (1920-2005). Pope John-Paul II's beatification took place in Saint Peter's Square in Rome on 1 May 2011. His official feastday was proclaimed as 22 October.
