Paczki Day is celebrated on the
Thursday (Tlusty Czwartek or "Fat Thursday") before Lent in Poland, but on Shrove Tuesday before Lent
in North America. Why is that?
On their arrival in North America, Polish immigrants discovered that many
American Catholics celebrated Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday") which
culminated on Tuesday. Hence, the date was amended to conform to local
customs.
